Letter from the Editor

Welcome once again to the Ccaps Newsletter!

The highlight of the July edition is an article by American freelance translator and co-director of the new Ccaps English translation service, Steve Yolen. In this thought-provoking article, Yolen makes a strong case in favor of the freelance translation business as being one of the most democratic and inclusive professional activities in the world today; a unique perspective from an experienced professional.

Also included in this month’s newsletter is an enlightening article by translator Ana Singule that explains the historical and cultural background behind some of the most popular sayings in Brazil. In order to better orient our English-speaking readers, we have used some advanced localization technology to enhance the reading experience. Included as a special addition to Singule’s article is a short introduction by myself describing the dilemma of translating slang and colloquialisms.

Finally, Ccaps engineer Ricardo Alves Junior shares helpful tips on website localization, including a description of the different types of websites and how these differences affect the localization process. Junior will also describe the steps required for website design to avoid later pitfalls.

Your comments and suggestions for the Ccaps Newsletter are highly appreciated. Feel free to contact us at newsletter@ccaps.net.
