When your company is growing and wants to present its products abroad, your first reaction when learning the costs of a localization company is to recall an acquaintance that used to attend an English course and can translate all the same.
I agree that the translation costs quoted by a corporation are apparently much higher, but what about quality? I am not saying that your English course acquaintance is not capable, but you will agree with me that however much a Brazilian person studies a foreign language, he or she will never reach the same level as a native speaker. This also applies to a foreigner translating to Portuguese, or even a Brazilian translator who has been living abroad for long. These people either do not master their language or tend to use old-fashioned phrases that no one uses for more than ten years…

Another problem is the time your acquaintance would take to translate. In a localization company, in addition to the fact that English translators are Americans (British, Irish, depending on your needs), we have techniques and tools that increase our productivity, allowing for shorter timeframes than those of home office translators. Especially because we have several registered suppliers who are experts in different subjects with whom we can share the work in case of urgency.
Up to now, we are just considering the case of simple texts. Now what if your translatable material included a website, with the following code PHP or a marketing material in Illustrator?
In such cases, if the translator does not know PHP or Illustrator, you will need to separate each sentence to be translated, submit the work to him/her and organize the translation back in its original format. Quite tiring, is it not? Not to mention the possibilities of error that such a manual process creates.
